His first story, Funny Funny, was published in Young Jump magazine in 2003. He continued to write short stories, which led to him teaching manhwa classes at a number of private schools and universities. From 2008 to 2010, he worked on the six-volume manhwa Tiger the Long Tail with Seung-Jin Park. Jung Gi illustrated two novels by French author Bernard Werber, Paradise and Third Humanity, later that year and again in 2013. Kim went on to work with other comic book artists, create artwork for political residences, illustrate novels and album artwork, and teach manhwa himself. He has six sketchbooks out.

Following Ubisoft’s first Ubisoft Forward presentation in July 2020, where the release date of the next Assassin’s Creed installment, Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, was announced, a standalone novel written by Matthew J. Kirby and illustrated by Kim Jung Gi was also announced.

The cover art was supposed to be posted on Jung Gi’s Instagram later that month, but it was postponed until October. When it was finally uploaded on October 7, the description revealed that Jung Gi drew the artwork and Pyeongjun Park, another Korean artist, colored it. The same day, a time-lapse video of Jung Gi drawing the cover was posted to the Assassin’s Creed UK Twitter accounts.

“It is with great sadness that we inform you of the death of Kim Jung Gi on Monday evening in Paris,” wrote the Daniel Maghen Gallery, which is currently hosting an exhibition of Kim’s work. At the age of 47, the South Korean artist died of a heart attack.
