Loretta Lynn Professional Career
In the late 1950s, Lynn began singing in local clubs. Later, she formed her own band, the Trailblazers, with her brother Jay Lee Webb. Lynn won a wristwatch in a talent show hosted by Buck Owens in Tacoma, Washington. Loretta’s performance was witnessed by Canadian Norm Burley of Zero Records, who co-founded the label after hearing Loretta sing.
Lynn’s relationship with the Wilburn Brothers, as well as her appearances on the Grand Ole Opry, helped her become the No. 1 female recording artist in country music beginning in 1960. Her contract with the Wilburn Brothers gave them the rights to publish her work. She fought the Wilburn Brothers for 30 years in vain to reclaim the publishing rights to her songs after terminating her business relationship with them. Because of the contracts, Lynn stopped writing music in the 1970s. Lynn first appeared on the Grand Ole Opry on September 25, 1962.
Lynn’s pioneering contribution to country music has earned her 13 Academy of Country Music Awards, 7 American Music Awards, 3 Americana Music Awards, 1 Billboard Music Award, 8 Country Music Association Awards, 4 Grammy Awards, and 21 Music City News/CMT Awards. Lynn was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Music by Berklee College of Music. For her 50 years in country music, she received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010. She was honored for her 50 years in country music with a rose named after her at the 44th Annual Country Music Awards in 2010.
Lynn’s third album for Legacy Recordings, Wouldn’t It Be Great, was released in September 2018 after being delayed due to health issues. Lynn’s health forced her to cancel all of her 2017 tour dates. CMT named Lynn Artist of a Lifetime in 2018. On October 19, 2019, Lifetime aired the highly anticipated film Patsy & Loretta, which focused on Lynn and Patsy Cline’s friendship. Lynn attended the film’s premiere in Nashville.
Lynn released her 50th studio album, Still Woman Enough, on March 19, 2021, the fourth album in her deal with Legacy.
