Marília Mendonça, one of Brazil’s most popular singers, has died in a plane crash on her way to a concert.The 26-year-old’s press office confirmed her death in a statement, and said four other passengers on the flight also died.
Their plane crashed between Mendonça’s hometown Goiania and Caratinga, a small city in Minas Gerais state located north of Rio de Janeiro.Minas Gerais state’s civil police also confirmed Mendonça’s death, without providing details about the cause of the accident, which occurred shortly before the plane was due to land.

Marilia Mendonca Fatal Plane Crash
Marilia Mendonca, 26, had taken to Instagram with a happy video minutes before the crash on Friday, documenting her journey on her way to perform at concert in Brazil.The aircraft would eventually plummet to the ground in Minas Gerais.
All five of the plane’s crew and passengers, including the singer – who had a two-year-old son – died.The plane crash-landed at about 3.30pm local time – just 12km from where Marilia was due to perform in the Brazilian city of Caratinga.
Pictures show the wreckage of the plane on the ground with emergency services at the scene.Marilia’s staff initially said she was alive and well after news of the accident emerged. They later confirmed she had died, and that her uncle was among the other four people killed.
The statement read: “With immense regret, we confirm the death of singer Marília Mendonça, her producer Henrique Ribeiro, her uncle and advisor Abicieli Silveira Dias Filho, the pilot and co-pilot of the plane, whose names we will preserve at this time.
“The plane took off from Goiânia bound for Caratinga/MG, where Marília would have a presentation tonight.“At the moment, this is the information we have.”Marilia had uploaded a video on Instagram right before the plane crashed, showing her boarding the plane with her guitar as she asked her followers to tell her the best places to eat in Minas Gerais.
She was also seen enjoying food onboard the aircraft.The video was uploaded about 3pm local time, before the crash-landing happened at 3.30pm.The airplane departed from the midwestern city of Goiania heading to Caratinga, where Marilia had a concert scheduled for later on Friday, according to news website G1.
“Marilia Mendonca leaves behind a legacy for Brazilian regional music and culture. She will certainly not be forgotten,” Brazil’s government said via its culture department.The cause of the crash was not immediately known.
