Professional Career
Peltola worked as an intern in the Alaska Legislature in 1996, and later that year, she ran for a Bethel region seat, which she lost by 56 votes. Peltola went on to become a reporter. Peltola left the House to work as the Donlin Creek Mine’s manager of community development and sustainability. She was elected to the Bethel City Council in 2011, and her term expired in 2013.
She has also served as a judge on the tribal court of the Orutsararmiut Traditional Native Council.From 2015 to 2017, she ran her own state lobbying firm, Sattler Strategies, and worked as a state lobbyist. Peltola has been the executive director of the Kuskokwim River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission since 2017.
Peltola was one of three candidates left in the initial June 11 primary for Alaska’s at-large congressional district special election in 2022.Peltola was the only Democrat to make it to the runoff. Independent Al Gross dropped out of the runoff, leaving two Republicans in the race: former governor Sarah Palin and Nick Begich III.
Three Alaska voters filed a losing lawsuit challenging the decision not to allow Republican Tara Sweeney, who finished fifth in the primary, to advance to the runoff.Sweeney withdrew her candidacy after the case was lost.Peltola won the ranked-choice runoff election over Palin and Begich and will be sworn in as Alaska’s U.S. representative on September 13, 2022.
