Carpenter made his major league debut on June 4, 2011, batting seventh and starting at third base. He played seven games in the majors that year, recording one double, a.067 batting average, and four walks. The Cardinals qualified for the playoffs by winning the wild card, but he was not named to the postseason roster. St. Louis won the World Series after defeating the Texas Rangers. Despite his minor contributions to the Cardinals’ World Series victory, Carpenter received a championship ring.

Carpenter was placed on the disabled list on May 23 after suffering a right flank strain (DL). The injury occurred while swinging for a double. At the time, he was batting.288 with three home runs and 20 RBI in 39 games while filling in for the injured Lance Berkman at first base. He made his first appearance at second base since turning professional in July.
