In both the 2019 and 2014 Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections, he was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (India) from the Atmakur constituency.
He was the son of Mekapati Rajamohan Reddy, a former Nellore MP.He died of a heart attack at Apollo Hospitals in Hyderabad on February 21, 2022.

Mekapati, who arrived in Hyderabad on Sunday after a week-long trip to Dubai, was getting ready to go to the gym at 7:30 am on Monday when he collapsed on the sofa at home with chest pain. He was rushed to Apollo Hospital by his family and gunmen. Gautam Reddy was pronounced dead at 9.16 this morning by Apollo doctors. ‘Gautam Reddy collapsed near home. Gautam Reddy was rushed to Apollo Hospital at 7.45 am. Gautam Reddy was brought to the hospital in an unresponsive condition. By the time he got to the hospital he was not breathing. The doctors announced that they had worked hard in the emergency department but to no avail.
