As a wild card entrant in the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach in 2001, Fanning established himself as one of Australia’s top surfers. In 2002, he won the Billabong Pro at Jeffrey’s Bay, earning him a spot on the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour as World Qualifying Series (WQS) Champion and a spot on the 2002 ASP World Tour.
Fanning tore his hamstring in 2004. After having his injury surgically repaired, he went on to become one of the top surfers on the ASP world tour. Fanning competed on the ASP World Tour for the sixth time since 2002, and for the ninth time since 1998 on the ASP World Qualifying Series.
He began his 2007 World Title campaign (WCT) by winning the Quiksilver Pro, the first event on the ASP World Tour, propelling him to the top of the rankings. He won the Santa Catarina Pro in Brazil on November 6, 2007, finishing ahead of Taj Burrow and Kelly Slater and clinching the 2007 ASP world title.
He suffered a groyne injury in the middle of the season in 2008. He was ranked seventh at the end of the year.
