Raised in Texas, Guyton was exposed to various types of music at a young age, and her material subsequently incorporates elements of contemporary country and R&B music. Moving to Nashville, Tennessee in 2011, she would later sign a recording contract with Capitol Records Nashville. In 2015, the label released Guyton’s debut extended play, Unbreakable.

Guyton was born in Arlington, Texas, the second oldest of four children born to her parents Phyllis Ann Roddy ( Mother ) and Michael Eugene Guyton (Father). Her family moved throughout the state during her childhood, due to her father’s job as an engineer.She was initially enrolled in a local public school, but faced racial discrimination from other families in the neighborhood and was subsequently moved to a private school. Despite this change, Guyton continued to experience racism, stating in a 2020 interview with NPR that her best friends’ parents would often refer to her with racial slurs.

Guyton also began singing as a child and developed an interest in music around five years old.She often performed in church choirs, notably at the Mount Olive Baptist Church in Arlington.She studied business and also worked several minumum wage jobs to support herself. Several of the jobs included work as a background vocalist, including an appearance singing in Nick Cannon’s film Underclassman.

Guyton met record producer Julian Raymond after relocating to Los Angeles. He introduced her to country music industry professionals Gary Borman and Steve Moir after being impressed by her singing voice. Both men aided in the development of country music artists including Faith Hill and Keith Urban. Following her first encounters with Borman and Moir, she relocated to Nashville, Tennessee in 2011. Guyton was quickly accepted into the city’s country music songwriting scene.

Guyton had the opportunity to audition for Mike Dungan, chairman of UMG Nashville, the same year. She was signed to UMG’s Capitol Records Nashville division after singing a song by Patty Loveless.She became the only black female musician signed to a major label in the genre as a result of her signing.

Guyton’s debut song, “Better Than You Left Me,” was released by Capitol in 2015.Jennifer Hanson, Jen Schott, and Nathan Chapman co-wrote the song with Guyton, who also co-produced it with Dann Huff.

In its first week of release, the song received 79 adverts to radio playlists, which had never been done before.The song’s early success in the charts was noted by The Guardian, particularly in light of Guyton’s status as a Black woman in a genre dominated by white men.The song had climbed to number 34 on the Billboard Country Airplay chart by July 2015.

Guyton was nominated for the 51st Academy of Country Music Awards in 2016 for New Female Vocalist of the Year.Her following single, “Heartbreak Song,” was also released that year. On the Country Airplay chart, the song peaked at number 45. On Capitol, she proceeded to release hits such as “Hold On,” “Sister,” and a rendition of Patsy Cline’s “Crazy.”

Guyton decided to write music in 2019 that was more reflective of her experiences as a black woman. In early 2020, she released a tune called “What Are You Gonna Tell Her?” that was inspired by those songwriting sessions. She also wrote the song “Black Like Me” at this time. Guyton’s experiences with racial discrimination were chronicled in the song, which was based on the same-named book.

Guyton co-hosted the Academy of Country Music Awards in 2021 with Keith Urban, making her the first black woman to do so.Guyton also recorded a cover of Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters” for the charity tribute album The Metallica Blacklist in 2021.Guyton revealed in June 2021 that her debut studio album would be released later that year.
