Nongthombam Biren Singh is the Chief Minister of Manipur, and he is an Indian politician, former footballer, and journalist. In 2018, N. Biren Singh received the Champions of Change award for his outstanding contributions to the country. Sri Venkaiah Naidu, India’s Vice-President, presented the award at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi.

Singh entered politics in 2002, joining the Democratic Revolutionary Peoples Party, and winning the Heingang assembly elections. After joining the Indian National Congress in 2003, he ran for re-election in 2007 on an Indian National Congress ticket. He served as the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports before joining the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2016. In 2017, he reclaimed his Heingang seat and was chosen Chief Minister when his party formed a government with the help of the Coalition.

He was elected to the Manipur Legislative Assembly in 2002 as a Democratic Revolutionary Peoples Party (DRPP) candidate in the Heingang constituency. Later, he became a member of the Indian National Congress. In May 2003, he was named Minister of State for Vigilance by the Manipur state government.

Singh publicly joined the BJP on October 17, 2016, and later became the BJP Manipur Pradesh’s Spokesperson and Co-Convener of the Election Management Committee. He was elected to the Manipur Legislative Assembly from the Heingang Assembly Constituency in 2017.

He was elected as the leader of the BJP Legislature Party in Manipur in March 2017, and after presenting a majority of MLAs to the Governor, he was sworn in as Chief Minister of Manipur on March 15, 2017.

He is Manipur’s first-ever BJP Chief Minister.

He lay the foundation stone for Manipur Public School’s new academic building in January 2018. Manipur Minorities and OBC Economic Development Society is in charge of the project (MOBEDS). The project, which will be funded by the Union Ministry of Minority Affairs, is expected to cost Rs 10.80 crore and will contain additional classrooms, a headmaster’s room, common areas, a library, labs, bathrooms, and separate dorms for boys and girls.

Singh organised the First State-Level Ginger Festival in Parbung, Pherzawl District, on April 20, 2018. The festival will go down in history as one of Singh’s legacy in the promotion of agriculture in the state’s most backward hill area. Farmers have claimed that they have been able to sell their organic ginger every year since 2018. During the COVID-19 pandemic in India in 2020, Manipur became the third state to declare itself coronavirus-free after the virus was successfully recovered from two patients who had tested positive.

On June 17, 2020, nine MLAs in Manipur who supported the N. Biren Singh-led administration revolted against him and withdrew their support, criticising him for the lack of action during the Covid-19 pandemic. He was one of eight MLAs who skipped the assembly proceedings during the vote of confidence, disobeying the party whip for the trust vote. In the presence of Ram Madhav, Baijayant Panda, and Manipur Chief Minister Biren Singh, all members of the Indian National Congress resigned and eventually joined the Bharatiya Janata Party.
