After serving as an assistant coach at UC Davis and Stanford, Hackett began his NFL career in 2006 as a quality coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers under Jon Gruden. He was there for two years before being traded to the Buffalo Bills for the 2008 and 2009 seasons. During those years, he worked with quarterbacks such as Bruce Gradkowski, Chris Simms, Jeff Garcia, Ryan Fitzpatrick, and Brian Brohm. In 2010, Hackett was hired as the quarterbacks and tight ends coach at Syracuse by Doug Marrone, whom he later followed to Buffalo and Jacksonville.
