Brockmann arrived in Bondi around 5.30pm AEDT on Monday, with thousands of people lining the streets to welcome him home. He was given a traditional Indigenous ceremony before having to endure the agony of walking up some stairs to address the crowd. Brockmann thanked everyone for their support and celebrated by popping a bottle of champagne, which he gladly obliged when chants of “shoey!” was raised.
His epic charity running effort is being lauded by Aussies everywhere, and there are already calls for Brockmann to be named the next Australian of the Year. Brockmann left Cottesloe Beach in Perth on September 1, and has since averaged more than 80 kilometers per day.
He ran for about 10 hours a day, beginning around 5 a.m. Brockmann was accompanied by his parents, Kylie and Ian Brockmann, girlfriend Jemma Griffin, friend and photographer Bradley Farley, and his physio during his 46-day journey. “He needs to get off his feet pretty quickly, because they’re pretty mashed by that point,” Kylie told The Sun-Herald. “He’s holding up incredibly well.” He’s thin, and I’d prefer him to be a little chunkier, but he’s still running. “I’m stunned.”
Brockmann was hoping to break the all-time record of 43 days set by German ultra marathon runner Achim Heukemes in 2005. But after suffering an injury around day 12, he needed to cut back on his mileage for recovery. A hugely swollen ankle left him unable to lift his foot or move his toes.”We strapped it like buggery and I banged out the 100 km pretty late into the night,” he wrote on Instagram.
Scan results revealed a severe overuse injury, and the recommended treatment was to avoid moving the injured part for six weeks. However, Brockmann chose cortisone injections and continued running.Things worsened from there, with his feet receiving such punishment that his blisters became full of pus and he had maggots living in his toe.It wasn’t just his lower body, though, with his biceps unable to straighten because they had been stuck in a running position for so long.In 2020, Brockmann achieved the remarkable feat of running 50 marathons in 50 consecutive days, raising more than $100,000
