Neil has spent almost 60 years in the media industry, most recently as Executive Chairman of the Southern Star Group, which he formed in 1988.
From 2003 to 2016, Neil served as Chairman of Ardent Leisure Group, one of Australia’s most successful owners and operators of premium leisure properties. Hanna-Barbara Australia, Reed Consolidated Industries, Hamlyn Group, Taft Hardie, Southern Star Group, and Southern Cross Broadcasting are among his other prior directorships.
Neil was also the Chancellor of Charles Darwin University from 2016 to 2018, as well as a former Director and Trustee Member of Bond University, where he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in 2009.
In addition, Neil served on the Board of the Art Gallery of South Australia from 2013 to 2019, is a former member of the University of New South Wales Faculty of Medicine’s Advisory Council and Dean’s Circle, and earned an Honorary Doctorate from the University of New South Wales in 2010.
Neil is currently a Director of the Sydney Orthopaedic Research Institute, a member of Sydney Theatre Company’s Chairman’s Circle, and a Foundation Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. He also serves on other advisory and community organisations.
Neil founded The Balnaves Foundation in 2006, and he was named an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 2010 for his contributions to business and philanthropy.
