Noah Lyles Professional Career

Lyles had committed to play for the University of Florida’s Florida Gators, but in July 2016, Noah and his younger brother Josephus turned professional and signed with adidas. Track & Field News named Lyles the 2016 high school boys athlete of the year in November.Noah Lyles will be honoured at the Gyulai Memorial in Szekesfehervar, Hungary, in 2020.

Lyles began 2017 by winning his first senior national title in the 300 m at the 2017 USA Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, New Mexico, improving the indoor world record by one hundredth of a second to 31.87 seconds.

At the 2017 World Relays, he won a silver medal with Team USA in the 4 200-meter relay. Lyles won two IAAF Diamond League meets in 2017, including a final victory over American champion Ameer Webb and world champion Ramil Guliyev. However, injuries prevented him from competing for much of the season, and as a result, he missed the 2017 World Championships.

Lyles returned to Albuquerque to compete in the 60-meter dash rather than the 300-meter dash at the 2018 USA Indoor Championships. He made it through his first heat in 6.57 seconds, matching his personal best time, but failed to advance to the semi-finals. After failing to make the national team for the 2018 World Indoor Championships, he focused on getting ready for the outdoor season.

He began by winning the 200 m at the IAAF Diamond League Doha meet, setting a new personal best time of 19.83 seconds. A few weeks later, he won the less common 150-meter dash at the adidas Boston Games in a personal best time of 14.77 seconds. He competed in the 200 m again at the IAAF Diamond League in Eugene, where he won and improved his personal best time to 19.69 seconds. This time matched the world record set earlier that year by Clarence Munyai.

Lyles’ world record in the 100 m was later surpassed by Baker (9.87 s) and Christian Coleman (9.79 s), but at the Herculis IAAF Diamond League meet in Monaco, Lyles set a new world record and personal best time in the 200 m with a time of 19.65 seconds. His time ranks him among the top ten fastest men in the 200 m of all time.

Lyles began the 2019 season by competing in 100-meter races, setting a world record of 9.86 (+0.9) in Shanghai on May 18. In his first 200-meter race, at the Pietro Mennea Golden Gala meet, he ran a 19.72 (+0.7) to equal Mennea’s long-standing 1979 world record time. A month later, at Athletissima in Lausanne, he lowered his personal best to 19.50 (0.1), moving him into fourth place on the all-time list. He ran a 9.92 (+0.3) 100 in Monaco a week later. With an expanded schedule in 2019, he competed in the US National Championships at the end of July, winning the 200-meter title in Des Moines in 19.78 (0.7) into a headwind. And he ran 19.65 (+0.2) in Paris.

Lyles could only manage a bronze medal in the 200-meter men’s final at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics on August 4, 2021, with a time of 19.74 seconds, equaling his season’s best at the USA Olympic Trials earlier that year. On August 21, he followed up his Olympic performance with a 19.52 (+1.5) in Eugene, Oregon, his second best performance and the ninth fastest 200 m mark in history.
