Riley played four seasons of college basketball for the Kentucky Wildcats, one as a freshman and three as a varsity player. He was selected First Team All-SEC, All-NCAA Tournament Team, NCAA Regional Player of the Year, SEC Player of the Year, and AP Third Team All-American as a junior for the 1965–66 Kentucky Wildcats men’s basketball team, helping the Wildcats to the NCAA title game in 1966.

Riley was chosen seventh overall in the 1967 NBA draught by the San Diego Rockets.Despite not having played college football, Riley was picked as a wide receiver in the 11th round of the 1967 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys.He was selected by the Portland Trail Blazers in the 1970 NBA expansion draught after three seasons with the Rockets.
