Nichols’ first job was as a sportswriter for the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel, where he covered the Miami Dolphins and the University of Miami football team. Nichols joined The Washington Post in 1996 to cover the NHL’s Washington Capitals. She later moved on to professional tennis, the Olympics, the National Basketball Association, and Major League Baseball. Nichols covered Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, Venus and Serena Williams in their early careers.

When ESPN hired her as a reporter in 2004, she made the transition to broadcasting.Nichols appeared frequently on SportsCenter, Sunday NFL Countdown, Monday Night Countdown, and as a sideline reporter for Monday Night Football and NBA broadcasts.

She also worked as a correspondent for Nichols left ESPN in January 2013 to join CNN/Turner Sports as the network’s first sports-related program in twelve years.She was described as a “respected player in the space” and a “big get” for CNN.

Unguarded with Rachel Nichols debuted in October of that year and was downgraded from a regular series to an occasional special by October 2014.Nichols was rehired by ESPN in 2016 by then-president John Skipper. In the years since, Nichols has spoken with Meek Mill and Philadelphia 76ers co-owner Michael Rubin about criminal justice reform, Mark Cuban following an NBA investigation into workplace harassment within the Dallas Mavericks organization, and Kobe Bryant in one of his final interviews.In the 2021 Sports Emmy Awards, she was nominated for “Outstanding Sports Personality/Studio Host.”Nichols joined Showtime Sports in September 2022 to contribute to their basketball coverage.
