Professional Career

O’Connor self-released his debut album Bcos U Will Never Be Free on SoundCloud and Bandcamp on September 4, 2015. After hearing the album, fellow English musician and producer Two Inch Punch contacted O’Connor and offered him management. Throughout O’Connor’s career, the two have continued to collaborate on songs such as “UNO,” “Best Friend,” and “Untitled.”

The album also piqued the interest of American rapper Tyler, the Creator, who emailed O’Connor about his enjoyment of the project. This prompted him to fly O’Connor out to Los Angeles the following year to work on his then-upcoming album Flower Boy, with O’Connor co-writing and contributing vocals to the songs “Boredom” and “Foreword.”

O’Connor released the single “UNO” on November 17, 2016, which Clash magazine described as “a buoyant keyboard riff underpins a hypnotic half-spoken vocal, one that veers from topic to topic in a hazy burst of creative mania.”On January 25, 2017, O’Connor released the single “Best Friend,” followed by the release of his second album Apricot Princess later that year. The work of O’Connor has been compared to that of “other artsy, post-genre teen artists.”

Following the success of Apricot Princess and Flower Boy, O’Connor released her first single, “Loving Is Easy,” on October 11, 2017, in collaboration with the Dutch artist Benny Sings.O’Connor made his television debut on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on April 16, 2018.On May 31, 2018, O’Connor collaborated with Randy Newman, the song’s creator, to release a cover of “You’ve Got a Friend in Me.” In addition, he was featured in Spotify’s Rise Program.

On October 9, 2018, O’Connor was scheduled to appear on the French television show Quotidien, but he refused to appear because it featured a “tasteless” sketch by comedian Alison Wheeler parodying the Ku Klux Klan.O’Connor released the single “New House” on February 14, 2019. On September 12 of that year, O’Connor released “10/10,” the lead single from his third album Pony.

Pony, released on October 25, 2019, was O’Connor’s first major-label album through RCA Records. The album was met with lukewarm reviews from critics, with Pitchfork rating it 5.0 out of 10. Associate Editor Anna Gaca called the album “relentlessly juvenile,” criticising its “childlike” sound in comparison to his previous releases.

On September 30, 2020, O’Connor released Live at Radio City Music Hall, an EP containing recordings from his performance at Radio City Music Hall in New York City during his Pony tour, along with a documentary on YouTube. This documentary depicted the events leading up to this performance, as well as the Pony tour’s premature end due to the COVID-19 pandemic.O’Connor confirmed in October 2020 that he was working on his fourth studio album, Who Cares? In January 2021, he liked a Tweet that appeared to confirm that it would be released later that year.
