His childhood ballpark in Chelsea was refurbished and named after him after he became a successful professional ballplayer. Martin was selected by the Montreal Expos in the 35th round of the 2000 Major League Baseball draft, but he did not sign. He then attended Chipola College for two years before being drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 17th round of the 2002 Major League Baseball draft.

Martin was promoted to the Dodgers on May 5, 2006, after starting catcher Dioner Navarro suffered a wrist injury. In the game, he had two hits, including a double. His first strike was directed at Chris Capuano. He hit his first major league home run on May 7 against Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Dave Bush. Martin and Éric Gagné made baseball history on June 6, 2006, when they became the first French Canadian battery in the majors. Martin’s play was so good that Navarro was traded to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on June 26, 2006.

Martin hit his first career walk-off home run in a victory over the rival San Francisco Giants on August 13, 2006.Martin hit a solo home run off Trevor Hoffman on September 18, 2006, the third of four consecutive home runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie the San Diego Padres.
