Sam Burns began his golf career as a member of Calvary Baptist Academy, where he went on to become a three-time individual state champion. In 2014, he was named the AJGA Rolex Junior Player of the Year. Burn also played college golf at Louisiana State University, where he won four events in his sophomore season and had 15 collegiate starts.

Sam Burns has also been named first-team All-American and NCAA Division I Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year for the 2016-17 season. He competed in the 2017 Arnold Palmer Cup for the United States, qualifying for the PGA Tour’s 2017 Barbasol Championship, where he placed T6.

On October 3, 2021, Burns won his second PGA Tour title at the Sanderson Farms Championship in Jackson, Mississippi. He entered the final round one shot behind the leader but took the lead and then pulled away with a stretch of four birdies in five holes on the back nine. On March 20, 2022, Burns won his second consecutive Valspar Championship title, beating Davis Riley in a playoff.
