Tim Couch Professional Career
Couch’s college success led to his selection as the first overall pick in the NFL draft by the Cleveland Browns, who were returning to the NFL as an expansion team in 1999 after the original team relocated to Baltimore in 1996. Couch took over as the team’s starting quarterback in the second game of his rookie season, replacing Ty Detmer. He started five seasons for Cleveland, eventually facing competition from journeyman backup Kelly Holcomb in his final two seasons.
Couch signed as a free agent with the Green Bay Packers after being released by the Browns in 2004. Couch went on to have a disappointing training camp and was booed off the field during his limited preseason appearances at Lambeau Field. Couch was sidelined for the entire year due to a rotator cuff injury that would eventually necessitate surgery.
Couch was released by the Packers during their final 53-player cutdown before the season. Couch filed a grievance against the Packers with the NFL Players Union because they failed to attempt an injury settlement prior to his release.
Couch auditioned for the Chicago Bears midway through the 2005 season and the Cincinnati Bengals in December 2005 after undergoing shoulder surgery in February 2005. During their workout, the Bears noticed that his arm was not in NFL shape and did not sign him. The Bengals did not pursue Couch, but Jon Kitna did not sign a new contract after his contract expired in early 2006.
In January 2006, Couch tried out for the Tennessee Titans. He worked out for the Miami Dolphins, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Houston Texans, among others. Despite good workouts, all three teams stated that they were not interested in pursuing him. Couch ended up missing the entire 2006 season after undergoing another shoulder surgery in late June. On July 20, 2007, ESPN reported that Couch had contacted all 32 NFL teams to see if any were interested in him for the 2007-2008 season. Couch signed a two-year contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars on July 29, 2007.
Couch was brought in to compete with Quinn Gray and Lester Ricard for the third-string quarterback position. He was 2-of-4 for 11 yards in one preseason game against the Miami Dolphins. Couch was released on August 18 after failing to make the third string. The Jaguars released former starters Byron Leftwich and Lester Ricard the following week, leaving them without a third-string quarterback.
Couch appeared in an episode of The Jersey called “Cheers, Jeers, and Tears” in 2002, where after crying over her responsibilities as cheerleading captain, Hillary Lighter (played by Brianne Prather) uses a magical jersey as she jumps into his body to get advice/lessons from professional cheerleaders on new cheers, much to the surprise of the coach and the other players.Couch currently works as an analyst for Fox Sports South on the weekly show SEC Gridiron Live.
