Adams was a member of Arsenal’s “famous back four,” which included Lee Dixon, Nigel Winterburn, and Steve Bould, and was known for its disciplined use of the offside trap under George Graham. At the age of 21, he became Arsenal captain on January 1, 1988; he would remain club captain for the next 14 years until his retirement.
Adams announced his retirement from professional football in August 2002, just before the start of the 2002-03 season, after a career spanning nearly 20 years, with his final match being the 2002 FA Cup Final. He was Arsenal’s most successful captain, having played 674 games for the club. The game ended 1-1, with Lee Dixon scoring in his final appearance for the Gunners.
