Armstrong, who was born in Burrumbuttock, New South Wales, and is of Barrabinya descent, was initially interested in rugby league before switching to Australian rules football and supporting the Sydney Swans. Adelaide selected Armstrong with the 58th pick in the 2007 AFL Draft. Armstrong made his senior debut against Fremantle in Round 1 of 2010 at Subiaco.

Armstrong left the Adelaide Crows in September 2011 and requested a trade to the Sydney Swans, the club he supported as a child growing up in New South Wales.Armstrong got his wish on October 16, 2011, when he was traded to the Swans in exchange for Lewis Johnston.He made his Swans debut in April 2012, replacing club captain Adam Goodes, who was suspended for the game. Armstrong looked up to Goodes as a child.

Armstrong was delisted by the Sydney Swans at the end of the 2013 AFL season and then joined Collingwood as a delisted free agent.He made his Collingwood debut in round 19 of the 2014 AFL season.Armstrong was delisted at the end of the 2014 AFL season, but was re-drafted in the rookie draught by Collingwood. Armstrong was delisted by Collingwood at the end of the 2015 season after only playing one senior game.
