Gupta started her legal career at the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, where she worked on cases involving criminal justice reform and voting rights. She also represented inmates’ rights as an attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union’s National Prison Project.

In 2014, President Barack Obama nominated Gupta to serve as the director of the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division. She supervised the division’s work on issues such as voting rights, police reform, and hate crimes in this capacity. During her tenure, Gupta played a significant role in the Department of Justice’s investigations of police agencies in Baltimore, Chicago, and Ferguson, Missouri.
