Cassel’s first on-screen appearance was in a Renault Clio commercial that aired in the United Kingdom in 1994. Cassel’s breakthrough role was in Mathieu Kassovitz’s critically acclaimed film La Haine (1995), in which he played a troubled adolescent living on Paris’s impoverished outskirts. Cassel was nominated for two César Awards for his performance in La Haine, for Best Actor and Most Promising Actor.

Cassel appeared in a number of French films during the 1990s and early 2000s. In 1996, he co-starred in the moody French film L’Appartement with Monica Bellucci (before they married). The film was critically acclaimed, earning a BAFTA Award for Best Film Not in English and the first British Independent Film Award for Best Film in a Foreign Language. The film was also a modest success in France, with 55,565 admissions in its first weekend and 152,714 total admissions.
