Cassel’s first on-screen appearance was in a Renault Clio commercial that aired in the United Kingdom in 1994. Cassel’s breakthrough role was in Mathieu Kassovitz’s critically acclaimed film La Haine (1995), in which he played a troubled adolescent living on Paris’s impoverished outskirts. Cassel was nominated for two César Awards for his performance in La Haine, for Best Actor and Most Promising Actor.

Cassel appeared in a number of French films during the 1990s and early 2000s. In 1996, he co-starred in the moody French film L’Appartement with Monica Bellucci (before they married). The film was critically acclaimed, earning a BAFTA Award for Best Film Not in English and the first British Independent Film Award for Best Film in a Foreign Language. The film was also a modest success in France, with 55,565 admissions in its first weekend and 152,714 total admissions. Although the film was never released in theaters in the United States, it was made available on DVD on August 22, 2006.
