Professional Career
Will Prosper has worked with numerous civil society institutions in Quebec, including the Popular Commission on Political Repression, the League for Civil and Human Rights, the Coalition for Equality and Against Systemic Racism, and the Faut qu’on se parle Collective. He frequently writes and appears in the media on social justice and human rights issues.
From 2003 to 2008, when he was 27 years old, he worked on his first documentary, The Lost Tapes of Hip-Hop in Quebec, a film about the emergence of Quebec rap, the prejudices surrounding it, and the media’s contempt for it.
In the summer of 2006, he tracked the success and demise of the Haitian-Montreal label Glamor Life 7 group South Squad, composed of Sneeky Tone, Bugzee, Willy Bombazee, and Big Chops. Only Canal D of all the popular Quebec chains agrees to air its documentary6.
On August 16, 2008, following the acquittal of the police officers who killed Freddy Villanueva, he and Nargess Mustapha co-founded the citizen movement Montreal-North Republik, which demanded, among other things, an independent investigation of the case, the resignation of the mayor of Montréal-North Michel Parent, and a memorial for Freddy Villanueva.
A year after Freddy Villanueva’s death, in August 2009, he co-founded with Nargess Mustapha the Hoodstock 8 social forum, a space where residents of Montreal-North can freely express and channel their anger 9.
