Yalda Hakim Family
Hakim was born in Kabul, in Afghanistan. During the Soviet–Afghan War, when she was only six months old, her family left the country. Migrants helped the family get to Pakistan on horseback by going over land. After living in Pakistan for two years, her family moved to Australia in 1986, when she was three years old.
Hakim went to Macarthur Girls High School in Parramatta, Sydney, where she played the violin and became a sports captain and prefect. She also went to the public school in Parramatta West. Hakim went on to get a Bachelor of Arts in Media at Macquarie University from 2002 to 2004.
Hakim got a Diploma in Journalism from Macleay College in Sydney in 2005. Hakim started working as a reporter for SBS World News Australia as a cadet in 2002. She worked her way up the ranks and in 2012 became the host of the show. During her time at SBS, she reported on major international events like the Arab Spring, the death of Osama bin Laden, and the Fukushima nuclear disaster.
In 2013, Hakim became the host of the BBC’s most popular news show, Newsnight. Later, she moved to BBC World News, where she now hosts the show Impact. She has also hosted many documentaries for the BBC, including “Afghanistan: The Wounded Land,” which won the Best Documentary Award at the 2015 Monte Carlo Television Festival.
Hakim is known for writing about human rights issues, especially those that affect women and girls in places where there is conflict. She has won several awards for her journalism, including the United Nations Association of Australia Media Award for Best TV Documentary in 2010 and the Walkley Award for Coverage of Indigenous Affairs in 2012.
Hakim had been in talks with BBC executives since April 2012, after being approached at a broadcasting conference in Brisbane. Subsequent meetings took place in New York, Dubai, and Afghanistan. She first appeared on BBC World News and the BBC News Channel in March 2013.
In October 2013, she interviewed Hamid Karzai, the President of Afghanistan, for Newsnight.Since March 2014, she has made several appearances as the presenter on Impact, ultimately becoming the programme’s main presenter later that year.
